Embracing Change: thriving in a career pivot

The only thing that’s constant is change, and it holds true for any career journey. While the unknowns of a career change can be daunting, it can also be a time to learn more about yourself and opportunities for growth.

In our panel discussion "Embracing Change" our panelists Sarah Voegelin (Fisher Investments), Jodi Maupin (Autodesk), and Katie Capuzzo (WISE) shared perspectives on navigating a career transition.

Here are some key takeaways to guide you in your professional journey.

Understand why you're pivoting.

If it's difficult to connect those dots in an interview, you need to reflect on what's promoting the transition. Are you being challenged? Are you developing? Are you running from or to something? Pivots don't always require a complete industry and company change. There could be room to explore a new role internally.

Don't be afraid to try new things.

Consider drafting an individual development plan of skills you want to gain, then talk to peers and leadership about it. Perhaps there are projects you can assist with that will help develop those growth areas. As you explore new roles, it's helpful to have an anchor (the consistent thread that ties the roles together, ex: partnerships) so you're making thoughtful decisions.

Expect setbacks.

Maybe you interviewed for a new role internally and didn't get it, or changed roles but hate it. Feel the disappointment then learn from the situation. Typically, the feedback that's hardest to hear requires some introspection because it may actually reveal blind spots. Reminder, a pivot doesn't have to be forever, so don't exhaust yourself with 'what ifs' for a perfect move.
