Managing Your Mental Health in Sales

By:

Stress is an intrinsic part of sales, but a lot of the anxieties and pressures that are associated with sales roles (i.e. having a quota) are self-induced. How can you manage the stress of being in a sales role and help yourself to only focus on the things in your control to help you achieve more wins?Allye O'Brien (Director of Sales @ Alma) and Preeya Voss (Vice President of Sales, North America @ BetterUp) shared their take on how to manage your mental health and crush your quota.

Take time for yourself as much as you can.

Not only do you deserve it, but you can't properly support those around you in your personal and professional lives if you don't ever refill your own cup.

Find an accountability partner at your company.

Find someone who you’re comfortable with at your company that you use to check in with regularly. You’ll be able to help give each other perspective, have a consistent person to report back to on how you’re feeling, and provide one another with a safe environment to open up about new ideas or concerns.

You can take care of your mental health and exceed quota.

If you think of your quota as a series of many small actions that are within your control versus one large looming number that's out of your control, it'll significantly decrease your stress and make you more likely to crush your number. If you control the activities (calls, emails, etc.) that lead to success through the year, you should be in a position where you’re not surprised at how the year wraps up.

Be deliberate about what you will and will not focus on for a given time frame to help you keep your eyes on the prize. Managing your mental health can only be achieved when you prioritize self-care over unnecessary stress, and by working on things that are truly urgent and within your control.
