Sales Spotlight: Growing in Your Career

By:

Remember your first job in high school or college…maybe even before that? Like our panelists, chances are you gained skills in those early positions that will continue to flourish as you grow in your sales career.

In our panel discussion “Sales Spotlight,” Cari Levine (Pendo), Amy Jarvis (Autodesk) and Katie Capuzzo (WISE) shared their journeys as sales leaders and tactical tips for growing in your career.

Here are some key takeaways to guide you in your professional journey.

Don't discount your early experience.

From teaching kids to swim to catalog sales, our panelists gained valuable skills in their first jobs that they've continued to hone throughout their careers. In your own career journey, take stock of your skillset often. Consistently visualize the professional skills or strengths needed for the role you're striving towards. Then, you can proceed to fill in the gaps.

Bring on the setbacks.

No matter how successful you are, challenging times are inevitable. It's not if they will happen, but how you'll respond when they do. Self awareness is key! Be open to critical feedback and intentionally explore your weaknesses. Ask someone in the role you aspire towards why NOT you, so you can have a holistic view of yourself from an outsider's perspective.

Grow your circle.

Take the formality of mentorship off the table and start having conversations - with peers, with current and past managers, with professionals in other industries! Your network should be diverse so you have a multitude of perspectives/experiences to glean advice from. Need a place to start? Mentorship is included with a WISE membership.

Whether you’re planning your next career move or have recently transitioned to a new role, remember that change equals growth. Soak up the uncomfort and take every opportunity to learn while you’re figuring it all out. Embrace your voice, raise your hand for opportunities and lean on others who will empower you to grow.
