What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the path life took me to land an Insurance Sales position. When I moved to New York City 11 years ago, I was a recent college graduate with an English degree and no real plan as to the career path I wanted to partake in. I underwent rigorous professional grooming through the variety of temp positions I accepted within different industries. In retrospect, the task of looking for a full-time position in the competitive job market of NYC allowed me to unknowingly practice the art of sales as I pitched my strengths and capabilities to countless companies. My first insurance firm took a chance on me and I was able to learn everything I know today. Initially, I was shy and soft-spoken, but through time and increased knowledge, I was able to find confidence and make connections to further my career.

What advice would you give for finding work/life balance?

The statistics behind workplace burnout are at an all-time high. The first piece of advice I would give to a fellow peer is that you are not alone in the battle for a desire to continually make advancements in your career all the while having a fulfilling lifestyle. What is key to making it happen is understanding that you have one life to live and if something was to occur today ending it the company would make the necessary adjustments and continue business as usual. I’ve found that setting boundaries to not let the two intertwine timewise with each other allows for me to operate at my optimum during my work hours leading to an increased rate of productivity. As tempting as it might be to press forward and push yourself to the limit with work, most times the best thing you can do is step away for a moment and come back to your tasks with a rested/renewed mind, body, and soul.

What is your favorite thing about your role?

Making connections with people has always been a strong suit of mine since I was young. Working in a role that allowed me to do this is rewarding because I am also able to connect with individuals from across the country and I am able to assist them in finding the necessary information. Sometimes that even includes the periodic travel to meet in person which is another one of my favorite pastimes. Since this company is still in their start-up phase, they really try to make sure your mental health is a priority and to provide the necessary tools to accomplish each task. I love that I am able to grow and learn in this role without feeling the pressure that usually comes with a sales position.
